Grounding / Earthing: Reconnecting with the Earth

Grounding, or earthing, is the practice of having direct skin contact with the surface of the Earth (e.g., walking barefoot on grass, dirt, or sand). The theory is that the Earth has a natural, mild negative charge, and direct contact allows for a transfer of free electrons into the body. These electrons are thought to act as antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and reducing inflammation. While still an area of emerging research, some small studies have shown that grounding can improve sleep, reduce pain and inflammation, and lower stress by shifting the nervous system towards a more parasympathetic (calm) state. It is a simple, free practice with a plausible mechanism and a high safety profile.
